I told Celia, "Do you realize that if people simply exercised some self-control, this would not even be an issue?"
We're often told that morality does not matter. Doesn't it? Think about what woud happen if people obeyed the Bible's commands regarding adultery and fornication. We would see fewer out-of-wedlock births, fewer abortions, fewer people on welfare, fewer fatherless children, and fewer divorces. This would result in stabler families, which in turn would drastically reduce crime, drug abuse, and assorted disciplinary problems in the school system.
Our founding fathers - even the ones who were religious skeptics - understood the need for morality in a free society. Benjamin Franklin said, "Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As men become corrupt and vicious, they have need of masters." John Adams said, "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for the government of any other."
If you've already failed in the area of sexual morality, please know that we have a merciful God who always forgives when we truly repent. However, that doesn't mean you should keep making the same mistakes over and over, nor does it mean your children are doomed to repeat your mistakes. Teach your children what the Bible says about sex and marriage. Be honest about your own failures, and tell them why they need to avoid those pitfalls. To say that morality is important is a gross understatement. It is absolutely essential for our country's survival.
