So where should Bible-believing Christians go from here? Let us remember, first and foremost, that God is still in control. As a friend of mine noted on his Facebook page, the Trinity did not meet in emergency session today, and they will not be holding a press conference. None of this took God by surprise. People may think this is the final word on the matter, but we know better than that. Our God has already said what constitutes marriage, and He will be the final judge.
Let us also remember that this is a great opportunity for the church. Dr. Russell Moore spoke at the SBC Pastors' Conference last week, and he pointed out that this new sexual "revolution" is making promises that it will never be able to keep. The sexual revolution of the 1960's made promises of "free love", but as Richard Land so eloquently stated, it was neither free nor love. This new revolution will deliver the same kind of disillusionment, but who will reach out to the refugees? That's where the church of Jesus Christ comes in. What a great opportunity it will be to point them to the life-changing power of the gospel!
Meanwhile, let us keep on speaking the truth in love. In today's political climate, where hatred and rancor abound, I know it is difficult to maintain a loving spirit. Nevertheless, that is what our Lord commands. Let us also remember that truth is often offensive. In recent days we've heard some very strong but very true words about the evils of racism, and I've not heard anyone express concern about whether such statements will offend the KKK. Why should we be concerned? Racism is wrong, and if the KKK doesn't like us saying so, that is their problem. Likewise, homosexuality is also wrong, and we should never apologize for saying so as long as we do it in a spirit of love. If people don't like it, that is their problem.
Let us also remember the words of an old gospel song: "I've read the back of the Book, and we win." Our God will have the final say on this matter, and when all is said and done, everyone will know that He is the Lord.
